//-->SideShowDocc HilfordCopyright 1996 Docc HilfordFirst published as a short story in The New Invocation Issue #82.EFFECT:Instruct a group of ten participants to merely thinkof any of the past presidents. Explain that there must be noduplications. To assist, supply a small note pad and number theleft side 1 through 10. Hand the pad to the first participantand tell him to write the last name of his mentally chosenpresident next to the number "1". When he is finished, he handsthe pad to the next person who writes anyother president's last name along side of the"2". The pad is handed to the thirdparticipant with the same instructions andTearcontinues through the tenth person. You nevertouch the pad after handing it to the firstIperson..-J---.IIIIII,When the final person finishes writingthe chosen name, tell him to remove the sheetof paper and fold it once each way. Take thefolded paper from him and tear it to piecesand drop them in the waist basket. Now, you concentrate and reveal detailsabout a past president. "I see high interestFigure#1rates, a failed rescue attempt in the MiddleEast, and peace talks at Camp David," yousay. "Jimmy Carter!" you exclaim. You tell the group not toacknowledge if they thought of the president mentioned, butcontinue to think of the name. You walk over to the sixth personand tell him that he is thinking of President Carter. He admitsyou are correct. You continue to call names and match them to the correctparticipants, giving a personality reading for each person basedon their choice.METHOD:As you can see this technique can be used for a typeof psychometry reading without items being given to you. It canbe used as a two-person telepathy demonstration if you wish. Itis very strong in any presentation you wish to use.SideShow doesn't need a duplicate paper for a billet switch, because no switch is used. A Center Tear would leave you with a1bunch of unreadable letters from thewould leave the first and last namesnot a billet switch or Center Tear -methods. It can used with a piece ofmiddle of the paper andout completely! SideShow isit is the best of bothpaper or a 3x5 card. The move is called a "Side Tear" and allows you to obtainthe long, left hand side of the list. Once you have this stripyou can deduce the presidents' names.THE TEAR:Take a piece of note paper about 3x5 inches. Drawa line down the left side of the paper. Flip the paper over (endfor end) so the line is on the leftside of the back. Number the paper from1 to 10 in a column on the left side.FoldThe line is on the other side of theInumbers. This line is strictly for yourorientation and will not be used onceyou have learned the tear. There are four different ways apaper can be folded once each way. YouFigure#2must direct the participant with youractions. Pantomime folding the paperfrom top to bottom and say, "Fold it in half." The participantwill do as he saw you indicate. Then tell him to "Fold it over"and pantomime folding it from left to right. Both of these foldsare the most common choice of a participant. Your pantomimessimply reinforce his choice. (If the participant folds from theright to left it's still O.K. Simply adjust the following movesto compensate.)The folded paper now has one side showing the line you drew.Hold the folded paper with the guide line under your right thumband the folded edge at the top. [see figure #1] Tear the paperin half lengthwise and place the lined side on top of the lefthand pieces.Turn the pieces 90° to the left, so the top points to theleft. The guide line is still visible. Slip your right thumbunder the folded, "lined" strip. Fold all the right edges to theleft and, without releasing the two lower strips, crease all thelayers in half. [see figure #2]Here is the tricky part. You now have three strips folded inyour left hand. Unfold the first two strips to the right leavingthe "lined" strip folded to the left. After the two strips havebeen unfolded, you will see the guide line exposed on the left.Tear the two strips in half at the crease. [see figure #3} Placethe right hand pieces behind the left pieces. Hold all thepieces in your right hand between your thumb and fingers. You have not torn through the guide line and the foldedleft hand strip is on top of the pile of pieces. All of thetearing actions should be done without looking at the paper andin a casual manner. [see figure#4]While your left hand takes the pieces from your right hand, your right thumb pulls the side strip back and keeps it. Yourleft hand takes the rest of the torn pieces and drops them intoa trash can or ash tray. The illusion is enhanced by the factthat a lot of writing is seen on the pieces as they fall intothe ash tray.Reading the stolen strip can be done while looking in acrystal ball, opening your fire wallet for a mysticalincantation, or while concentrating atthe corner of the room. Lowering thelights gives ample time to read theTearstrip. You always have it handy forIreference.IIf you want to do a two-person act, simply drop the strip in your partner'slap while blindfolding her.Later, you can secretly tear thestrip in quarters and add them to theother pieces. It should be apparent that anycontrolled list can be used. If you knowthe list of possible items, i.e., names of presidents, states, countries, etc., the first two or three letters will cue youthe full word. Thus, on a list of presidents, the letters L-i-n ... could only indicate Lincoln. And N-i-x... could only be Nixon. You may require a tiny bit of pumping, such as with the lettersN-o-r ... whether it is the state North Carolina or NorthDakota, but you can do so in the middle of you presentation formaximum effect. The numbers are also retained on the strip so you know whowrote which name. You can reveal the names in a different orderthan they were written. You don't have to memorize anythingbecause the strip is your cue sheet.NOTE:There is no reason to burn thepaper after it is torn. Thethea~ricalreasoning behind the paper's use is sound, that is, so there are no duplications ofnames. The destruction's reasoning is alsosound. The list has no other use so itshould be destroyed. Burning it only drawsattention to the fact that the names couldpossibly be glimpsed somehow.Figure#3Figure#43NOTE:The more names that are crowded on the paper, thesmaller the participants will write. This means you can recovermore letters on the side strip.NOTE:Zip codes can be used if you steal the right side andnote the last three digits. You will know the first two if theparticipants live in the same area.NOTE:Use full Social Security numbers and retain the firstthree digits. They indicate a state and determine where theperson received their card.NOTE:You may chose to vary the lists among theparticipants, such as asking the first person to think of astate and pass the pad. The second person thinks of a city inthe chosen state and passes the pad to the next person. A greatdeal of information can be controlled in this manner and theaudience will remember thatseveral people thought ofalmost anything!Al MANN(1",V:"J"H:,j_.........1I'('b.'U.t.'.~f....'.?.,,:wa'.~I(,~W'I~2:2Dear Docc.Wonders never cease. You rattled me with your-Jagged Edge- (as I call it) billet test. It isgreat and original. I am sure that the teristaswill love it. I only wish I had it when Iwrote The Porloined Thought.I will surly write it up as soon as I amsettled down. I stopped writing for a while.NOTE:If the participantfolds the paper differentlyfrom the way you instructhim to do, don't panic. Itis a simple matter to holdthe paper upside down whiletearing. The key is to knowwhere the numbers are andnot to tear through them. After a very littlepractice, this will becomesecond nature to you.The SideShow can be usedclose-up in a living room oron stage for a largeaudience. It is compact andplays very big. A performercan get 20 minutes of solidentertainment out of thissimple move. All with asingle piece of paper and alittle showmanship.Enjoy.I expect to be called for a lecture tour ofEurope. I will mention the Jagged Edge. AfterI return I will publish a book on the JaggedEdge.Aletter from Ai Mann about theSideShow.4
